This is a stiff cocktail with roots deep in New Orleans. Some folks claim that the Sazerac is the oldest cocktail to be mixed in America, dating back to the pre-Civil War South.
INGREDIENTS
- 50ml Rye Whisky
- 1 sugar cube
- Handful of ice
- Angostura bitters
- 15ml Absinthe (or Anise Liqueur)
- Lemon twist garnish
METHOD
- Add crushed ice and 15mL absinthe to a glass and set aside
- In a second glass, add 1 sugar cube, 1 dash of bitters, and 2 dashes of bitters. Add 50mL of rye whiskey and crush together
- Discard crushed ice and absinthe from prepared glass. Do not rinse the glass
- Strain the cocktail into the absinthe-coated glass
- Garnish with a lemon peel
